Fallout New Vegas Day#5: Their Name is Legion and They are Many

Day 5 is a pretty post-apocalyptic session. I’m introduced to a major enemy group in a quite nice scene that really grounds the dark future of the game. There’s quite a bit of fighting and I’m back in the rhythm of the strategy of the game. The narrative is pretty good overall — there’s a lot of nice subplots although the melodrama gets kind of thick and predictable in a couple places. Overall though, the game is reaching a steady level of Fallout quality and the core plot is just starting to take some interesting twists. Spoilers within.

Fallout New Vegas Day#4: The Dangers of the Open Road

Day 4 is a complex mix of the good and bad of the game. The good: all of the wonderful exploration and hidden narrative that’s just in the wilderness of the game and the way that emergent features of NPC and location can make good scenes. On the other hand, the level design seems to be skewed to the difficult in places and it makes the game frustrating, especially when you can see an easy tell step to walk to. Overall it’s a good session that ends on a sour note of bad balancing. Spoilers within.

Fallout New Vegas Day#3: New Sheriff in Town

Day 3 is basically me dealing with a lot of content in a single city. I do some fighting, talk to some locals in need of help, and then do some more fighting. The fighting is pretty good; I like the V.A.T.S. systems of non real-time shooting and while I get devastated in the first couple fights, I remember that you can be strategic with combat in Fallout. The talking is mixed. The narrative is not that entertaining, but I’m given a genuine choice about what to do about Primm that I think will have an effect on my game in the long run. It’s that kind of narrative interaction that makes the new Fallout games great. Spoilers within.

Fallout New Vegas Day#2: My Time as a Vigilante

Day 2 of Fallout is getting back into the rhythm, but I am starting to see some of the bugs and flaws people were talking about. The session is a set of conversations that lead to a fight, and both are pretty good examples of what Fallout does well. However, the game doesn’t seem to save after major points, so I end up having to replay a long major scene when I’m killed by apparently thin air before I get to a save point, and there is an absolutely atrocious mini-game. The narrative takes a slightly interesting turn at the end, but nothing earthshaking yet. Spoilers within.

Fallout New Vegas Day#1: Go West, Young Courier

Fallout New Vegas is so far exactly what you can expect from a modern Fallout game. There’s a lot (in my opinion too much) of character creation interface and overly precise determination. And then it’s tutorial for the most part as I remind myself how to fight and such. But overall, the atmosphere is basically right and some of the characters are pretty good, so it’s an interesting start. I’m still excited. Spoilers within.

Enslaved: Final Smack

Enslaved is ultimately a disappointing game. There are a lot of good elements and the characters in particular are quite good, but there are so many things that are slightly mishandled or wrongly implemented that in the end it falls short of being a satisfying game.  I did learn things from the game, and Ninja Theory has shown some serious chops in places,  but I left feeling that there were some significant issues that keep Enslaved from being anything more than a much weaker version of other, much better games. Details within.

Enslaved Finale: Back to Reality

My final session of Enslaved has one of the highest notes of the game, but the ending is disappointing. The narrative simply doesn’t resolve in a satisfactory manner. There’s a couple of pretty nice fight scenes, although I fight much sloppier and still do fine, which is not a great sign here. But it’s overall disappointing. There are some nice things about this game, but the narrative and gameplay simply don’t come together into some truly good. Spoilers within.

Enslaved Day#5: Earth to Sky to Water

Long session for Day 5 and it’s a mixed bag. The plot here is a bit filler, with some really obvious fetch-quest goals. A new character is introduced who doesn’t really add much. The fights are okay and there are some mediocre set pieces, but nothing really shines this session. It basically feels like filler to get to the end. And the last chapter of the session has a pretty annoying logic puzzle, but it’s followed by a nice set of timed fights. Net okay, at least enough to keep me rooting for the characters and interested in the ending. Spoilers within.

Enslaved Day#4: Bay of Pigs

Day 4 on Enslaved in a relatively short session that takes the story in a new direction. There’s one very fun gameplay scene, even though some of the plot of that section gets a bit repetitive. The new stuff is generally good though, and I’m having more fun with this game now than I did at the beginning.  The game is pretty good despite its flaws. Spoilers within.

Enslaved Day#3: Back to the Village

Day 3 of Enslaved gets us into a new part of the narrative. There’s nothing too surprising in the main plot; it’s pretty standard and what you are led to expect. This session contains a lot of nice little moments and more good characterization from Trip. The fight design remains pretty interesting. It’s a pretty good session over all, but this game can’t seem to shake the flaws of its core jumping mechanic. Spoilers within.
